The Port of Olympia embarked on an ambitious plan to redevelop one mile of prime waterfront on the southern end of the Puget Sound. The Waterfront Development Plan presents a vision that integrates existing and future infrastructure into publicly and privately funded opportunities to create a regional attraction for business and recreational amenities. SiteWorks provided landscape architectural services to the multidisciplinary team lead by TAS Architects. This included examining how the plan can improve connections to downtown Olympia and other attractions in the central core of the city, integrating sea-level rise mitigation measures seamlessly into the plan, and creating iconic public spaces that will draw people to the water and allow them to connect directly with the Puget Sound.

SiteWorks participated in an extensive public outreach campaign that occurred during the height of the COVID pandemic, using multiple technologies and platforms to garner input for the plan including live remote presentations, public surveys, and web-based information. Input from an advisory group, made up of the Port of Olympia Board and select stakeholders, including the local First Nations Tribes, was also integrated in the dynamic and flexible outreach process. The plan sets the blueprint to develop partnerships amongst government, civic, and business interests to create a one-of-a-kind waterfront that will provide opportunities for both public access and activities and business opportunities.
